Love the skin you're in!

Our skin is probably the thing that has the biggest influence on our lives. We worry about sun damage, pimple breakouts, injury and then, of course, the inevitable wrinkling and sagging of our skin, particularly the facial skin. Our skin is subject to the nasty three Ds – Degeneration of the quality and elasticity of the skin due to break down and loss of collagen; Descent due to the effect of gravity on our features; and Deflation which comes about due to the loss of bony structure as well as loss of fat and muscle, particularly in the face..
In today’s cosmetic culture, we try to address all three of these aspects. Degenerationis addressed in multiple ways such as lasers or injections of products like PRP(Platelet Rich Plasma derived from our own blood) as well as topical skin care products to help hydrate and regenerate our skin. Deflation is managed by the injection of fillers into the areas that we have lost volume. These may be Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers such as Restylane/Emervel  or collagen stimulators such as Sculptra. Descent has always proved to be the most difficult to manage.

So what have we done, to date, for Descent? The original method was a surgical face lift. The early facelifts were not great as all they did was tighten the skin and did not take in to account the other issues like volume loss. Surgical approaches have improved considerably but are still a big ordeal for many. This spawned the interest in non-surgical treatments. Several tightening methods are available through the use of lasers or radio-frequency devices. These can only do so much in the way of lifting. Then we had threads – this was a nice concept in that these threads could be placed under the skin and the skin pulled up tightly creating a very nice lift. Unfortunately, these threads were made of nylon which does not absorb in the body and they would occasionally cause problems with migration and popping out through the skin. They were taken off the market because of this.

On the 24th of January, I went to Montreal to learn and train on a new product that should be coming in to Canada very shortly. These are called PDO threads. The big difference here is that they slowly (over about 8-10 months) absorb into the body just like internal surgical sutures. So, now we can get all the advantages of the lifting from the threads without the disadvantage of them being permanent (by the way, after about 2-3 months, they are not needed as they stimulate new collagen in the area that provides the lifting after that). These threads can be inserted under the skin surprisingly painlessly, sometimes needing only a topical anesthetic.

But, here’s the really fascinating thing about them. They come in a variety of thicknesses and lengths. Some are smooth and some have barbs to pull up the skin. So this now opens up a whole new opportunity. As an example, during my training time, we used the threads for a face lift, neck lift and tightening, breast lift, upper arms and thighs. We also used them to treat cellulite in the thighs. How good is that? And, the only possible risk could be some superficial bruising that may take a few days to clear. The results should last from 2-5 years and new threads can be added any time. This is going to be a remarkable addition to our treatment options for managing Descent.

The company assures us that they should be available in Canada within the month. They have been in the States for over a year and Europe for much longer than that so they have had good trials. We will let you know as soon as we have these at the MediSpa.
